Introduction: Best Dining Bets Frommer

Best Neue Deutsche Küche: Nowhere is modern German cuisine or neue Deutsche Küche practiced with as much skill as at Bamberger Reiter, Regensburgerstrasse 7 (tel. 030/2-18-42-82), one of Berlin's leading restaurants. It's known for the quality of its cuisine, for its service, and for the innovation of its chef.

Best Prussian Cuisine: You're in Prussia, so be sure to sample the finest of that old-fashioned cuisine at Marjellchen, Mommsenstrasse 9 (tel. 030/8-83-26-76), the only Berlin restaurant that specializes in East Prussian cooking. Amid a Bismarckian decor you'll dine on the likes of pork spareribs stuffed with prunes or potato soup with shrimp and bacon.

Best View: High-altitude views and good German food keep the tables filled at the 213-foot-high Funkturm Restaurant, Messedamm 22 (tel. 030/30-38-0996), which offers sweeping panoramas of the new/old German capital.

Best Hotel Restaurant: First Floor, a showcase restaurant within the Palace Berlin Hotel, Budapesterstrasse 42 (tel. 030/25-02-10-20), stands near the Tiergarten. Its regional German and French cuisine is almost without equal in Berlin.

Best Newcomer: The culinary traditions of Italy and Japan are wed harmoniously at Langhaus, Charlottenstrasse 59 (tel. 030/20-94-50-70), occupying two floors of a grand building flanking the Gendarmenmarkt. An international team produces some of the most imaginative dishes in Berlin.

Best International Restaurant: Vau, Jägerstrasse 54 (tel. 030/202-9730), is Berlin's restaurant of the minute. The short menu features top-notch creations handled with skill and finesse by one of Berlin's best-trained kitchen staffs. Reservations are imperative.

Best Continental Cuisine: During the latter days of the Cold War, Rockendorf's Gourmet Restaurant (tel. 030/21-99-21-70), was often photographed as a symbol of the "good life" available within West Berlin. Since reunification, it has moved, but is still elegant and refined, offering a creative cuisine to a clientele that includes the most important movers and shakers in Germany.

Best Moderately Priced Restaurant: Hearty cookery and robust flavors make La Table, Damaschkestrasse 26 (tel. 030/3-23-14-04), an ongoing favorite, particularly among theater and media personalities. This bistro prepares German food the old-fashioned way. Come here for all the old favorites, including Tafelspitz (boiled beef with vegetables).
